Sustainable experiences in mallorca

low season activities for sustainability in Mallorca

Considering the ongoing manifestations of the local communities against the negative effects of over-tourism, we support the idea of seasonal adjustment. This would mean decreasing the amount of  tourists during high season to avoid over-crowdedness in the island, and increasing tourism during low and mid-season. We therefore suggest some interesting experiences for the cooler months of the year

Watersports in less crowded spots all around the island:

The lower temperatures from October to March bring less stable weather. Consequently the winds become variable as well, in intensity and direction. There are more days with wind from the South, which makes beaches near Palma and spots in the South-East coast more interesting for watersports. These wavy and rougher conditions are more fun and suitable to advanced riders.

 Exploring the energyzing spots:

Formentor: The northern most tip of the island of Mallorca offers some of the best views. A protected natural site since 2019. Its access is limited to private vehicles during crowded hours in high season, and public bus runs for service. It is freely reachable by foot or bicycle at all times, a ‘must visit’ spot, more enjoyable in lower season.

Cap de Formentor

Puig de Randa: One of the best panoramic viewpoints of the Serra de Tramuntana, the pic of Randa is also called Magic Mountain for its special positive energies. The Santuary de Cura (Sanctuary of Healing) located at the top of the peak at 543m of altitude has been popular as a pilgrimage point. It can be reached by bicycle or through a hike trail.

Es Vedrà (Ibiza): This giant limestone rock stands 400m high right off the southern coast of Ibiza, neighbor island of Mallorca, reacheable within a few hours of ferry ride. It is rumored to be the tip of the lost city of Atlantis. Said to be the third most magnetic spot in the entire world, causing compasses and even birds to lose direction. Limestone is considered to hold the maximum concentration of energy, which is what makes its atmosphere so energetic. Visitors leave the rock feeling inspired, creative and healed.

cultural visits in alternative local communities

Annual Walk to the Lluc Monastery: Known as the  “Marcha de Güell a Lluc a peu”, the 48km long walk from Palma to the spiritual center of Mallorca has been the most popular hike of the island for over 50 years. Other routes of “Lluc a peu” from Soller, Pollensa, and Caimari that lead to the sanctuary can be hiked year round. Since the 13th century the Santuary de Lluc has been recognized as a pilgrimage destination for its combination of  faith, culture, and nature.

dance events and courses in palma de mallorca

Salsa, Bachata, and Kizomba: SBK is stronly diffused in Mallorca among the local and expat community. Several schools offer dance lessons and organize dance parties weekly in Palma de Mallorca. Cuban style is the most popular for Salsa, but there is also a community of L.A. stylers as well as On 2 with even a NY room in the parties at Victory’s (the biggest school of Palma). Bachata has been growing in popularity among the young and new dancers thanks to the Bachata Sensual style. It is possible to find lessons and bachata parties almost every day. Kizomba is played at 10 to 20% in most of the SBK parties. Festivals such as the Mallorca Latin Paradise have been organized annually during off season.

Brazilian Zouk: There is a community of Zouk dancers that organizes lessons and parties weekly. M-Zouk (Mallorca Zouk) was created and developed by Mestre Gege, a Brazilian capoeira and Lamba-zouk (dance mixing Lambada and Zouk) master who moved to Mallorca and wanted to keep dancing his native dance. There are now several schools that currently diffuse this style, also inviiting Brazilian teachers for special events from neighbouring Barcelona, an important Zouk center where major festivals are also organized yearly. In Mallorca as well, the M-Zouk Experience is an annually hosted congress that has been bringing hundreds of dancers from all over Europe since 2004. Argentinian Tango:  Mallorca has a vibrant tango presence in Palma, with a dedicated community of local and expat dancers, regular events, and classes. Several schools like Tango Mallorca, Mandragora Tango Club, and Tango en Mallorca offer lessons and wokshops for all levels, collaborating with tango masters visiting from Europe. Milongas (tango social dances)  are held weekly in cultural centers, bars and dance studios, and special events featuring tango orchestras and  international teachers and performers organized occasionally.
