Summer season – winds and destinations

Prevailing and seasonal winds

Trade Winds: Also called Easterlies, blow from Northeast (in the northern hemisphere) and Southeast (in the southern hemisphere) to the West along the Equator.  They are permanent and prevailing winds caused by temperature and pressure differences, together with the Coriolis effect (Earth turning towards the East). These Winds make the base for local accellerations with the thermal effects from warmer temperatures.

Trade Winds have been used by sailors to cross the Atlantic, since the Age of Sail (mid-15th to 19th Century) when the merchant sailing ships were crossing the ocean waters. Northeasterly winds start in the shores of the North African continent and blow towards Brazil and the Caribbean

Winds in the Mediterranean Sea: The dominant wind of the Egean Sea is the Meltemi (N) which blows in the summer from the Northeast in the Cyclades (Naxos and Paros in particular), and bending Northwest towards the Dodecanese Islands (Rhodes Island in particular). It is a seasonal wind caused by the encounter of the high and low pressures in the western and oriental Mediterranean Seas respectively.

Thermal winds, caused by the temperature difference between land and sea, are typical to the summers in Italy. They can be either Maestrale (NW) or Libeccio (SE). From November on the system changes to winds caused by climatic perturbations, and the directions remain Maestrale and Scirocco

The Balearic Islands in Spain, and Mallorca in particular, are also blessed with a thermal sea breaze called Embat (NW). From June to the end of August the Embat blows most days in the Bay of Pollensa near Alcudia ,in the north of the island.

Winds in the European Atlantic Coast: The Nortada (NW) provoke by high pressure on the Atlantic and low pressure on the Iberian peninsula, blows during the summer months. The whole coast of Portugal (West coast and the Algarve), as well as Spain, with world famous Tarifa are blessed by it.

Brazil Nordeste: Southeasterly Winds blow from Southern Africa to the Northeast of Brazil. Thus the whole coast of Brazil from Sao Miguel do Gostoso to Barra Grande (around 300km) is blessed with constant winds coupled with thermal effects during the period from mid- June to end of August.

Caribbean Islands: Landing point of the Northeasterly Winds, Isla Hispaniola and Cuba are famous for their year round warm and windy climate. These islands also benefit from nice waves generated in the Atlantic Ocean, providing for good surfing conditions as well.

Greece: The Meltemi starts to blow around mid-May. The southern island of Rhodes gets good intensity from June. Rhodes, with its  multiple spots of Theologos, and Prassonissi, to name the best known ones, also benefits from the west winds coming from the Mediterranean.

Italy: Thermal winds typical to the summers in Sicily (Lo Stagnoneand Sardegna (Punta Trettu and Porto Pollo) begin to blow in June, and with good intensity until the end of September. In Puglia, the Gargano and Salento areas start having nicer temperatures and established winds in June. And finally, Lake Garda and Lake Como offer good solutions in the Northern region of Lombardia

Spain and Portugal: From April to October the whole coast of Portugal offers good conditions for learning and progressing in Kitesurfing in its lagoons. The Obidos lagoon is located one hour north of Lisbon and close to the famous Surfing spot of Peniche. In the southern region of the Algarve, the Alvor lagoon sits near the vibrant city of Lagos. And right next to it, Spain has its mecca of Tarifa, as well as the islands of Tenerife and Fuerteventura in the Canaries, and also the island of Mallorca in the Balearic archipelago.
